Here is a secret that surprises most California dog owners: your pup is welcome at nearly every drive-in campsite in the state beach system. Falling asleep to waves with your dog curled up next to you is completely allowed.

The catch is the beach itself. Most California state beaches do not allow dogs on the sand at all, even when the campground fifty feet away welcomes them. Plenty of families have set up camp, grabbed the leash, walked down to the water, and met a sign that ended the afternoon.

So the trick to a great beach camping trip with your dog is simple: pick one of the few campgrounds where the beach says yes too.

The four campgrounds where your dog can join you on the sand

**Leo Carrillo State Park (Malibu).** Leashed dogs are allowed on North Beach, the stretch north of Lifeguard Tower 3. Tide pools, sea caves, and your dog trotting along the wet sand at sunset. South Beach and the trails are off limits, so stay north and you are golden.

**Point Mugu State Park (Malibu/Ventura).** The standout here is Thornhill Broome campground, where the campsites sit directly on the beach. Your dog is allowed on the sand, which means the sand is basically your front yard for the weekend.

**New Brighton State Beach (Santa Cruz).** One of the rare Northern California state beaches where a leashed dog can walk the shore. Shady campsites on a bluff, a staircase down to the water, and Santa Cruz County's generally dog-friendly attitude.

**San Elijo State Beach (San Diego County).** Dogs are allowed on the beach south of Lifeguard Tower 16, a short walk from the campground. The rest of the beach is dog-free, so note the tower number.
Beach Camping With Your Dog in California: Where the Sand Actually Says Yes

Everywhere else on the coast (Doheny, Carpinteria, South Carlsbad, and the rest), your dog can camp with you but cannot touch the sand. A few offer decent consolation prizes, like San Onofre's bluff trails where dogs are welcome.

    The rules, everywhere

    - Six-foot leash, attended at all times
    - Overnight, dogs sleep inside your tent or vehicle, never tied up outside
    - Pack out everything, and yes, that includes what you think the tide will handle

The hard part is not the rules

Here is the bad news: the four sand-friendly campgrounds above are some of the most contested reservations in California. Beachfront sites at places like Thornhill Broome and Leo Carrillo can sell out months ahead, sometimes the same morning the booking window opens.

The good news: people cancel constantly. The move is to set up a free cancellation alert for the campground you want. Campsite Scan watches California beach campgrounds around the clock and emails you the moment a site opens for your dates, and their site scans  California guide breaks down the exact dog rules for every beach campground on the coast.

    One last tip

Check the park's own page the week you go. Dog rules are set per park and they do change, and the ranger at the kiosk enforces the posted sign, not a blog post. But get the right campground, get the site, and there are few better weekends anywhere than a dog, a tent, and a California beach.
