If dogs are a man’s best friend, then what does that make cats? If we’re ranking pets, we think cats are right up there with dogs. Although it depends on your lifestyle, age, and daily hobbies, cat and dog owners seem to disagree on what personality traits make the most desirable pets. It is undeniable, however, that cats make excellent companions.

In fact, we don’t think cats get enough credit for their nurturing, playful personalities. Sure, some are mischievous, but their mischievous side can also be charming. It all depends on who you ask! Some of cats’ redeeming qualities include being loyal, loveable, and independent. They’re also furry and precious, which makes them win major points in our book!

Traits That Make Cats Great Companions

Loyal

Just as we’re loyal to our cats, our cats form an attachment to us as well. As a result, cats are loyal once that bond is formed. Anyone who has a cat knows how protective and loyal they can be, which is one of their many endearing qualities.

Low Maintenance

Cats are pretty low maintenance if you think about it; you don’t have to walk them, bathe them, or train them nearly as much as dogs. They aren’t needy and like to sit quietly most of the day, when not in a playful mood. Cats are self-sufficient, independent pets, which leads us to the next reason on our list.

Independent

Cats don’t make you feel guilty for leaving and on the contrary, enjoy their alone time. When having to leave the house for work, or when leaving to get together with friends, your cat won’t put up a fight or give you the pleading eyes. Chances are your cat has just as much fun home alone.

Self-Cleaning

Cats can clean themselves and spend a lot of time grooming themselves. Cats don’t roll around in mud and dirt them come back inside smelling like wet dogs. They prefer to stay clean and work hard at it! This is why their fur is known for being so fluffy and soft.

Cost Less Than Dogs

Comparatively speaking, cats are less expensive to own than dogs. They don’t require as much food, toys, or training. Adoption and vet fees are also often less expensive for cats than for dogs.

Long Lifespan

Although it’s inevitable, losing a pet is like losing a family member. Cats have long lifespans, which means more time with your beloved pet. The average cat lives 12-18 years.

Great with Kids

Cats have playful personalities, which makes them great with kids. If your family has young kids or grandchildren, a cat is a wonderful pet for the household.

Purring is Soothing

Anyone who has a cat knows how soothing their purring can be. Having your precious cat purr away on your lap can be therapeutic, help ease stress and even help you sleep.
